A bounce rate is a metric that gives you a general idea of what percentage of people actually take the time to interact with your piece of the internet. Typical bounce rates can vary depending on what the purpose of your website is. But here are some numbers that will give you an idea of what to expect.
25% or Lower: Something is probably Broken
26-40%: Excellent
41-55%: Average
56-70%: Average
56-70% Higher than Normal but could be alright depending on the website
70% or Higher: Something is probably Broken or could be just really bad.
So what should you do if your bounce rate is too high? Here are a few things to check out to see if one of these might be the problem.
Slow Loading Page
The internet is a fast-paced place. People as just clicks away from exploring a whole new world. If you page is taking too long to load, they might do just that. You can test to see how well your page is loading with tools like, Google Page Insights, or Pingdom. This will let you know if this could be one of your problems.
Misleading Title Tag and/or Meta Description
When people search for content using Search engines, they are shown a brief summary of what they can expect on your website. This comes in the form of a Title and Meta Description. If they decide to click on the link to your website, it’s because they like what they saw listed in the search results. If they get to the page and they don’t see what they are expecting they will most likely leave. Make sure that your Tile and Meta Description matches what is on each page.
Low-Quality or Under Optimized Content
People might be bouncing from your site because your content isn’t very good. Maybe the layout is hard to digest. Or maybe the copywriting is just plan hard to understand. Go over your pages with high bounce rates and make sure that the content is laid out in a way that visitors can understand easily. Large titles and clear writing are key.

Does your site barrage visitors with popup ads or email sign up forms? I know you want to get their email address, or make money of Ad revenue, but these things can scare away potential customers. Make sure that you use lead capture forms and advertising tastefully.
